Who We Are

Izere Mubyeyi Organization is a pioneering community-based initiative in Rwanda dedicated to advancing disability rights and inclusion. We exist to ensure that children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not left in the shadows, but are given equal access to education, health care, family support, and opportunities to thrive.

Our History

Izere Mubyeyi Organization's story began in 2004, when 23 courageous Rwandan parents of children with intellectual disabilities made a bold decision: to transform their personal struggles into a collective mission. Faced with stigma, exclusion, and limited services for their children, these parents united around a vision of dignity, opportunity, and societal inclusion for every child with a disability.

What started as a grassroots movement of determination and hope soon grew into a structured organization. In 2008, we were formally granted legal status under Ministerial Order N° 39/11 of 02/04/2008, published in the Rwanda Official Gazette N° 23 of 8 June 2009, cementing our place as a recognized voice for disability inclusion in Rwanda.

As our vision grew, so did our impact. We established a Special Needs and Inclusive Education Center, which has become a model of special needs and inclusive learning where children with and without disabilities study side by side. In November 2022, this center was proudly accredited by the National Examination and School Inspection Authority (NESA).

Today, our work is structured into five core program areas that directly address the needs of children, families, and communities.

From humble beginnings to a nationally recognized force for change, Izere Mubyeyi Organization stands as a living testimony of what determination, collaboration, and vision can achieve.
